Oregon Coast Day Trips

The Oregon Coast is barely an hour west of Corvallis along scenic Route 20. Driving there to the coast range is a gorgeous trip in itself, then you end up in Newport, Oregon on the coast. From there, you can go north or south to any number of possible Oregon Coast day trips. Here are a few favorites:

Newport’s Historic Bayfront

Lined with unique shops and restaurants (including the original Mo's), there's plenty to see here. Check out the “stag party” of male sea lions lounging and barking on the docks during most of the year.

Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area

A scenic lighthouse (lighting the way since 1873) overlooks colonies of nesting seabirds and a “Cobble Beach” with spectacular tide pools you can see at low tide.

Oregon Coast Aquarium & The Marine Science Center

The Oregon Coast Aquarium has a host of exhibits displaying tide pool creatures and fish that live under the waves off the coast, including sharks! The OSU-affiliated Hatfield Marine Science Center has great learning resources about coastal creatures, geology and climate.

Plan on between 2 and 3 hours to get to the start of your day trip to Multnomah Falls, east of Portland on I-84. You’ll need to plan ahead to visit during less crowded times.
